One of the great many thing you discover on your first journey on the Internet might or might not be IRC ( Internet Relay Chat ) It's one of the things I found first ... and the main reason I'm still in the Internet industry. That little protocol got me my first exposure into Linux.

IRC was first developed by Jarkko Oikarinen in responce to an outcry against the limitations of the available chat programs. Jarkko Oikarinen decided to write a computer program that would enable multiple users to chat across a network. This project was known as Internet Relay Chat.

ircII ( pronounced I.R.C. two ) is one of the many client programs written for use on IRC. Unlike the numerous other clients out there it does not have a graphic interface but run's in plain text. Now most will think this is very confusing, but ircII actually gives you more control then most graphic clients. Apart from having much more versatile commands in ircII, ircII also has a very well supported scripting language that gives ircII it's REAL power.

Scripts are automated programs that can make using ircII easier and more fun, by giving you conveniences and extra features not found in your standard client. Convenience scripts save you time and effort. For example, instead of typing "/join" you can just type "/j" to join a channel. Protection scripts are availible to protect you against hacking, flooding, and other IRC evils.
